1 · Pricing & Payment
How much does a hand-forged wrought iron fence cost per meter?
This is the question we hear most often, and it is a bit like asking what a car costs. The price per running meter depends on the height of the fence, the thickness of the material, how much pattern the design carries, and the surface protection. Interior railings are sandblasted and electrostatically powder coated, with patina on request. Exterior work additionally needs hot-dip galvanizing, two transports to the galvanizing plant, hand filing of every zinc spike and run, and chemical aging of the zinc so the paint grips properly. As a starting point: an interior fence 1 m high, posts included, starts at 290 EUR; exterior starts at 350 EUR. Prices are without installation and VAT.
How much does a forged stair railing cost per meter?
The price depends on the surface protection. Exterior stair railings need better protection against the weather than interior ones: every part is sandblasted, hot-dip galvanized, every zinc spike and run is filed off by hand so the zinc is nowhere wounded down to the iron, then the zinc is chemically aged for paint adhesion and the railing electrostatically powder coated in any RAL color. An exterior stair railing starts at 400 EUR per running meter. Interior railings skip the galvanizing chain, so they start at 340 EUR. Prices are without installation and VAT.
How much does a forged garden fence cost per meter?
It depends on the height of the fence, the thickness of the material and the amount of pattern. A garden fence 1 m high, without posts or fixing elements, starts at 310 EUR per running meter. Prices are without installation and VAT.
What is the price difference between a hand-forged fence and a mass-produced metal fence?
Very relative. If both are made properly and you compare by weight per running meter, the difference is 20 to 30 percent.
Do you charge for the initial consultation and quote?
No, provided it is a serious project and you send us photos of the existing situation plus a photo or drawing of the fence you want. Distance and project size are also a factor.
What factors influence the final price of a custom forged fence?
The height of the fence, the thickness of the material and the amount of pattern. The surface protection also matters, since exterior protection costs more than interior.
Is a forged iron gate more expensive than a fence of the same length?
Usually yes, for several reasons. Gates are made from thicker material than the fence. Fences most often stand on a wall, so the gate is taller and gets an extra row of pattern at the bottom, as you can see in many photos of our work. The closing mechanism matters too: a simple latch is the cheapest, a lock with handle and cylinder the most expensive.
Do you require a deposit, and how much?
Our usual terms are these. If we install and a pre-assembly on site is needed: 30 percent before work starts, 40 percent at pre-assembly, 30 percent on delivery. If we install without pre-assembly, or the piece is a one-off made to order: 50 percent before production, 50 percent on installation or delivery. For larger projects, by stages as agreed.
What payment methods do you accept for international orders?
Bank transfer.
Can I pay in installments for a larger project?
For larger projects we invoice by stages, as agreed.
Does the quoted price include installation, or is that separate?
Installation is charged separately, but it is listed as its own line in the quote we prepare for you.
Are delivery costs included in the quote for international customers?
Delivery is charged separately, but it is listed as its own line in the quote, so you see the full number before you decide.
How much does a forged balcony railing cost compared to a fence?
It depends on the height. For mounting on top of the slab, the railing itself is 97 cm high plus a 3 cm gap to the floor, and the starting price is 350 EUR per running meter, posts included. If the railing is mounted on the face of the balcony slab, it looks best when it covers 10 to 20 cm of the slab edge, and the price rises by roughly 10 to 15 percent, with installation also costing more because a pre-assembly is needed. Prices are without installation and VAT.
Why do hand-forged fences cost more than aluminum or PVC alternatives?
A hand-forged fence carries incomparably more work and craft knowledge, and the energy and material costs are incomparably higher too.
Is there a minimum order value for international projects?
For pieces made in the workshop, no. For delivery abroad, the transport cost decides whether a small order makes sense.
How long is a quote valid once issued?
30 days.
2 · Materials & Durability
What kind of steel do you use for your forged fences?
S235JR and S275JR structural steel, bought in 6 m bars.
How long does a hand-forged iron fence last?
Indoors, in the dry, it is practically eternal. Outdoors the lifespan depends on the surface protection. We sandblast every exterior piece first so the zinc can bond properly, hot-dip galvanize it, remove every zinc spike and run by hand with a file so the zinc is never wounded down to the iron, chemically age the zinc so the paint grips, and finish with electrostatic powder coating in any RAL color, patina on request. In 37 years of business we have not had a single rust complaint.
Will my forged fence rust, and how do you prevent it?
If it is properly hot-dip galvanized and properly painted, rust is nothing to worry about.
What is hot-dip galvanizing and do you offer it?
Every piece we make for outdoor use is sandblasted and hot-dip galvanized. The steel is dipped in molten zinc, and the zinc then protects the iron underneath.
What coating or paint systems do you use for outdoor ironwork?
Every outdoor piece is sandblasted, hot-dip galvanized, and after chemical aging of the zinc for better paint adhesion, electrostatically powder coated.
Can forged iron withstand coastal climates and salt air, for example Nice or Monaco?
Our experience is good. We have installed a number of fences on the Adriatic coast, the oldest 25 years ago, and to this day there has not been a single problem.
How does forged iron perform in alpine climates with heavy snow and road salt?
Most of our garden fences stand along roads that get snowed in and salted every winter. In 37 years we have not had one rust complaint. The one real risk is gravel: on roads where cars drive fast over grit, flying stones can chip the paint.
Are your fences solid forged or hollow-profile welded?
For fences we use solid material exclusively. Hollow profiles appear only in posts, and only when the post is thicker than 40 mm.
How thick are the bars and pickets you typically use?
It depends on the height of the fence and on your wishes. The thinnest bars, for fences up to about 70 cm, are 12 x 12 mm. Up to 120 cm we mostly use 14 x 14 mm, above that usually 16 x 16 mm. The thickest bars we have ever used in a fence were 25 x 25 mm.
Do you use traditional joinery, rivets and collars, or only welding?
On our pieces you will see no welds. Occasionally a weld helps during assembly, but it then disappears under a collar. Where rivets are used, there is no welding. Our joinery is rivets, collars, and bars woven through punched holes.
Can a forged fence be repaired decades later if damaged?
Of course. We have restored quite a few very old forged fences in our own forge.
Does the color coating fade in strong sun?
Every paint fades with time, depending on the shade. Paints carry pigments, and some pigments last longer than others. Position, air pollution and sun exposure all play a part. Sun and acid rain are a nuisance, but any decent paint outlasts a human generation. Erosion works like very fine sandpaper, slowly thinning the coat. We call the result natural patina.
What maintenance does the galvanized and powder-coated finish need?
If the steel was properly sandblasted before galvanizing, and the zinc spikes and runs were filed off by hand so the zinc is nowhere wounded down to the iron, rust is not your worry. The zinc protects the iron, and the paint protects the zinc. The paint coat is around 100 microns thick, and erosion at the harshest locations, cemeteries or the coast, grinds off up to 5 microns a year. By that arithmetic the coat holds at least 20 years even in the worst spots. We have been on the market 37 years, I remember nearly every location where our fences stand, and not one has needed repainting yet.
3 · Design & Customization
Can you create a fully custom fence design from my sketch or idea?
Most of our work is one of a kind. We have often developed designs with architects and planners, and many customers have arrived with their own idea or a photo. If your idea can be executed in proper forging technique, rivets, collars, bars woven through punched holes, then yes.
Do you have a catalog of existing fence and gate designs to choose from?
No catalog, because we have no serial production. What we do have is a large archive of photos from finished projects and over 70 display fence segments at the forge in Blejska Dobrava 123, Slovenia. You are welcome to visit.
Can you match an existing historical fence for a renovation project?
If it is a forged fence, yes.
Can you replicate or restore antique ironwork on heritage buildings?
Yes, we have restored quite a few very old fences. If the fence returns to its original place, restoration makes sense. If it must also be reworked to fit a different building, the cost is usually higher than forging a new one, and we will tell you so.
What design styles do you work in, Art Nouveau, Baroque, modern minimalist?
Whatever your heart desires.
Can you incorporate initials, family crests, or motifs into a gate?
Yes. There are examples on our website.
Can the fence design continue across gates, railings, and window grilles for a unified look?
If the heights allow it, yes. Small corrections are usually needed.
Can you combine forged iron with wood, glass, or stone elements?
Often. Stair and balcony railings frequently get a wooden handrail, and we mount garden fences, gates and window grilles onto stone walls and between stone pillars. Glass we combine with iron in canopies, chandeliers and lamps. We like a challenge: if you wanted a forged and glass fence, we would take it on.
What RAL colors are available for the final finish?
Essentially any color on the RAL scale. 98 percent of our work is painted RAL 9005 FS, black with a fine matte structure. Copper or silver patina sits beautifully on it, and for interiors also gold or green.
Do you make automated or motorized gates in forged iron?
We forge the sliding and swing gates, and our long-standing partner automates them.
Can you design around sloped terrain and stepped walls?
No problem. Lately we rarely work on flat ground.
Will I see a drawing or 3D visualization before production starts?
Once we agree on the rough starting points and your wishes, we draw a sketch and you approve it before anything is forged.
Who owns the design? Can my custom design be reproduced for others?
A matter of agreement. If the pattern was drawn on your side, it is absolutely your pattern.
4 · Process & Timeline
What does the process look like from first contact to installed fence?
Partly it depends on how fast you are. Best is a visit to our forge in Blejska Dobrava 123, where over 70 different fences, 15 window grilles and chandeliers are on display, and we agree on the pattern, the deadline and the price. Then come measurements, planning, forging of the elements, assembly, pre-assembly, sandblasting, hot-dip galvanizing, painting and installation.
How long does it take to produce a custom forged fence?
It depends on how full the production is and how big the project is. Ask us for the current lead time.
How far in advance should I order before my construction deadline?
Same answer: it depends on production load and project size, so ask early rather than late.
Do you visit the site for measurements, or can I send measurements myself?
If we install, we absolutely take the measurements ourselves.
How do site measurements work for international customers?
If we install, we measure. If your own builder installs, you send us exact measurements, the exact pattern, photos of the existing situation and the location of the building, and we supply instructions and the fixing material.
What information do you need from me to prepare an accurate quote?
Exact measurements, the exact pattern, photos of the existing situation and the location of the building.
Can I visit your forge in Slovenia to see work in progress?
Gladly, on weekdays between 8:00 and 14:00. You are welcome.
Do you send progress photos during production?
No problem, gladly.
What happens if I want to change the design after production has started?
It depends on the stage the project is in. If the change means throwing away material and work, we will of course charge you for it.
How many revisions of the design proposal are included?
Our goal is a satisfied customer. When the project is serious, we will not complicate over this.
Is every piece truly forged by hand, and by whom?
Every segment of our work is forged by hand in our forge, to measure for your piece, by Gregor, Bruno or Benjamin. When brute force with the sledgehammer is needed, Dušan steps in. Every machine in our forge exists purely to produce force, because reshaping thick stock takes more power than human muscle has. Every segment is then joined the smith's way, with rivets, collars and bars woven through punched holes, no visible welds, into the finished piece.
How many generations has your family been blacksmithing?
Two. Bruno founded the forge in August 1989, and today his son Benjamin forges alongside him. The two master smiths here are Bruno, with 42 years at the anvil, and Gregor with 28.
Can you handle large projects like estate perimeters or hotel entrances?
The largest project for a single client in our career was 270 meters of garden fence, three sliding gates, one double gate and two pedestrian gates.
Do you work with architects and landscape designers directly?
Yes.
What is your current lead time for new orders?
It changes with the order book. Ask us and you will get a current, honest number.
5 · Installation & Measurement
Do you install the fence yourselves, or do I need a local contractor?
A matter of agreement. We install 95 percent of what we make. It depends on the size of the project and the location.
Can my local builder install your fence with your instructions?
Yes. We gladly supply instructions and the fixing material.
What foundation or base does a forged fence need?
A forged fence usually sits on a wall or a retaining wall. At minimum you need foundations for the posts.
Can a forged fence be mounted on an existing stone or concrete wall?
Yes.
How are fence posts anchored, concrete footing or plate-mounted?
Installation is always improvisation: you adapt to what is actually there. We have installed over 8 km of forged fences to date, so experience is not what we lack.
How is a heavy forged gate hung so it doesn't sag over time?
We do not build gates without a diagonal brace, and to this day not one has sagged. We did have two problems with bad foundations, so it is wise to ask us for advice before you pour them.
Can you install automated gate openers on your forged gates?
For drives and automation we have a partner who knows his trade.
What tolerances do you need in my wall or pillar measurements?
The metalworker's unit is the millimeter, but it depends on the execution.
How do you handle uneven ground or slopes during installation?
We build the fence or gate at the same angle as the terrain, wall or retaining wall. Swing gates cannot open uphill, and sliding gates on a slope need a brake fitted along with the automation.
How long does installation take on site?
Depends on the size of the project.
Do you install outside Slovenia, in Austria, Germany, Italy, France?
Yes, and wider. Our work has been installed in Norway, Belgium, Germany and even Tanzania.
What does international installation cost compared to local?
The difference is mainly travel and time on the road, and it is listed as its own line in the quote, so you see it before you decide.
Is my presence required during installation?
Not necessary. Usually all we need is access to a power socket, sometimes a water tap.
What site preparation must be finished before you arrive?
Best is when all the other builders have finished and cleaned up after themselves. If we are installing over a wooden surface, keep it protected.
6 · Maintenance & Care
How do I maintain a forged iron fence year to year?
For the first 30 years you can forget about maintenance. After that it depends on the location and the environment. In the worst case, it will need repainting after 30 years.
How often does a forged fence need repainting?
Depends on the location. We have been on the market 37 years, I remember nearly every location where our fences stand, and when I drive past I usually stop at the customer and check. To this day not one has needed repainting.
What should I do if I spot a rust point on my fence?
Without mechanical damage there is almost no way for it to rust. The fence is hot-dip galvanized, and the zinc acts as a sacrificial anode: a more active metal that corrodes itself instead of the iron, giving up its electrons and taking the damage so the steel underneath does not.
Can I pressure-wash my forged iron fence?
You can. Just don't overdo it.
How do I care for forged ironwork near a pool with chlorine exposure?
In our experience, no trouble at all.
Do moving parts like hinges and locks need lubrication?
Yes.
Do you offer maintenance or refurbishing services for older ironwork?
Yes.
Can an old rusted fence be restored instead of replaced?
Yes. It takes sandblasting, hot-dip galvanizing and a fresh coat of paint.
How do I protect my fence from damage by trimmers and garden tools?
With a tarp.
Does snow and ice removal salt damage forged fences?
Salt damages everything, concrete and stone included. It speeds up erosion and thins the paint faster. In 37 years it has not caused us a single complaint.
What warranty do you give on the coating and finish?
10 years on the paint, 30 years against rust. The warranty does not cover mechanical damage.
Will climbing plants, ivy or roses, damage the forged ironwork?
Damage it, no. But moss can start growing on the fence as a consequence.
How do I clean bird droppings or tree sap off the finish?
Droppings with a wet cloth, sap with cooking oil.
What is the expected repaint cycle in coastal vs. inland climates?
In 37 years of operation, as far as I know, not one of our fences has been repainted, coast or inland.
7 · Comparisons & Alternatives
Forged iron vs. stainless steel, what are the trade-offs?
If both are made properly, both will defy time for a very long time. The difference: the years lay a noble patina onto forged iron, while stainless that doesn't shine isn't stainless.
Why choose hand-forged over factory-made "wrought iron look" fencing?
A fence forged by the hands of a real, sworn master has a soul. It is usually a work of art, and because of the effort invested, such a master takes care in every phase, surface treatment, protection and installation included. In factory production the priority is usually the fastest and largest possible profit. Here as everywhere: you get as much music as you pay for. And be careful, the market has ever more "masters" who weld cheap industrial elements into "artistic pieces" and sell them dearly to buyers who cannot tell the difference.
How does a forged fence compare to PVC/vinyl fencing over 30 years?
A forged fence with proper surface protection, sandblasting, hot-dip galvanizing and well-prepared zinc under a quality coat, lasts more than 50 years without repainting. When erosion finally grinds the paint down to the zinc, you repaint. There is no rust risk in between, because the zinc protects the iron. How a PVC fence looks after 30 years I do not know. I suspect there is not much left to restore.
What are the disadvantages of forged iron fences, honestly?
Honestly, I don't know. However I turn it over in my head, I cannot find a better alternative.
How does hand forging differ from ornamental welding?
Light years.
Why are imported mass-produced iron fences so much cheaper?
Good imported forged fences are very comparable to good domestic ones. The difference is that wages and contributions in Slovenia are more than 10 times higher than in Vietnam or Cambodia, and about twice as high as in Bosnia or Serbia.
Does a forged fence increase property value more than standard fencing?
A tasteful, well-made forged fence is the final and very visible makeup of a house, and it certainly raises the value of the property.
Which is more secure: a tall forged fence or an alarm system?
Depends what the thieves came for.
How does forged iron compare to Corten steel aesthetically and practically?
Forged iron must be protected against rust by hot-dip galvanizing and paint, and it looks completely different from Corten. Corten is a steel that protects itself: the copper and phosphorus in it form a thin layer of rust that stops oxidation from going deeper. Its advantage is zero maintenance, and if the surface is damaged, a new rust layer simply forms. The catch: Corten is sold only as sheet. The bars and profiles we need for forged work I have not found on the market, despite trying.
Is powder coating or wet paint better for forged ironwork?
The really good, proven wet paints have disappeared from the market for environmental reasons. We use electrostatic powder coating, which needs proper preparation and chemical aging of the zinc for the paint to grip.
Hand-forged railings vs. glass railings for balconies, which and when?
The function of both is safety, so it is above all a matter of taste. Glass does not block light and does not obstruct the view. Forged iron gives a house warmth and is its ornament.
8 · Delivery & Service Area
Which countries do you deliver to?
We work across Slovenia and beyond its borders. Our pieces have gone as far as Norway, Belgium, Germany and Tanzania. It all depends on the size of the project.
How is a forged fence packed and shipped internationally?
Long fence sections travel on a forestry trailer, protected for transport, and the shipment is insured.
How much does shipping to Germany, Austria, Italy or France cost?
It depends on the distance and the size of the project, and it is listed as its own line in your quote.
How long does delivery take after production is finished?
A matter of agreement. It can be the same day.
Do you deliver to Switzerland, and how do customs work?
Yes. We have installed as far as Norway, which is also outside the EU, so customs paperwork is not new to us.
Can I pick up my order directly from your forge in Slovenia?
Of course. That is the option we like best.
Is the shipment insured against transport damage?
Yes.
What do I do if the fence arrives damaged?
Contact us.
Do you deliver to islands or remote alpine locations?
Depends on the situation, a matter of agreement. Geography is a logistics question, not a refusal.
Are there import duties within the EU for your products?
No. Within the EU single market there are no customs duties.
How are very long fence sections transported, in segments?
With a forestry trailer.
Who unloads the shipment on site, do I need machinery?
We unload with a truck crane.
Can you coordinate delivery with my construction schedule?
If we align early enough, of course.
Do you serve the Munich / Bavaria region regularly?
Yes. Our work is already installed in Germany, and Munich is about a four-hour drive from the forge.
Do you take on projects on the Côte d'Azur and in Monaco?
We have not worked on the Côte d'Azur yet. We have installed in Norway, Belgium, Germany and Tanzania, so distance is not the obstacle. The size of the project decides.
9 · Warranty, Trust & Company
What warranty do you offer on your forged products?
Pieces for interior use carry a lifetime warranty. Exterior pieces carry 30 years against rust and 10 years on the paint. Mechanical damage is not covered.
Who is behind ForgedWorks, what is your story?
I am Bruno Kalčič, born 1967 in Jesenice, the town where they say iron is at home. Like most locals I decided to earn my bread with iron and trained as a smith in 1986. Already as an apprentice I secretly tried to create the odd piece of art, but the gap between machine smithing and artistic smithing was too wide. Without a good teacher there are no good pieces, so after military service I went looking for one. The local masters guarded their knowledge jealously, but by great luck I found a fantastic smith in Austrian Carinthia, heir to over 250 years of family tradition in artistic forging, who was willing to take me on. He taught me an enormous amount, and he poisoned me with his view of the craft for good.
Where is your forge located and can I visit?
Blejska Dobrava 123, Slovenia, near Lake Bled, with a large exhibition space. On weekdays between 8:00 and 14:00 you can also watch the work in the forge. Welcome.
How many years of experience does your master blacksmith have?
There are two masters: Bruno with 42 years and Gregor with 28.
Can I see references and past projects in my region?
As a rule I do not hand out my customers' addresses. Garden fences are no problem, most stand along public paths and roads. For balcony and stair railings it is a matter of agreement.
Do you have customer reviews I can read?
Yes.
Are you a certified, registered craft business in the EU?
Yes, with certificates.
What happens if something breaks within the warranty period?
It gets repaired, no fuss.
Do you subcontract production or is everything made in your forge?
Every piece is forged in our own forge, from steel we buy in 6 m bars. All forged segments are joined the smith's way, rivets, collars, bars woven through punched holes, into the final piece. The only services we entrust to outside specialists are hot-dip galvanizing and electrostatic powder coating.
Have you completed projects for hotels, restaurants, or public spaces?
Yes. Quite a few restaurants and inns carry our work, and our pavilions stand in three parks and at a hotel in Dvorska vas.
Can I speak to past customers as references?
As a rule I do not bother my customers, but I can ask them for that favor myself.
What makes your forge different from other custom metalwork shops?
The name says it: in a forge, iron is forged. We also join the forged elements the smith's way, with rivets, collars and bars woven through punched holes, into a whole. Locksmiths and welders weld pieces together from cut and bent profiles.
Do you sign and mark your work like traditional smiths?
Yes.
How do you ensure consistent quality on large projects?
Project size has absolutely no influence on quality here.
Is my deposit protected if something goes wrong?
100 percent.
10 · Regulations, Permits & Technical
Do I need a building permit for a fence, and do you help with drawings?
That depends on the fence height and the local rules of the municipality where the fence will stand. Check with your local building authority first. You approve a drawing from us before production either way, and we provide statics if your architect requires them.
What are typical maximum fence heights allowed in the EU countries you serve?
That is decided locally, by your municipality or state building code, exactly as it is here. Check before you order. We forge to whatever height your local rules allow.
What are the rules for fences on property boundaries?
For a fence directly on the boundary you should certainly involve your neighbor, and local rules decide the rest. Check with your municipality.
Do your gates and railings meet EU safety standards for gaps and heights?
The common rule sets bar spacing at 12 cm. Our internal rule is stricter: rather under 10 cm than over 11. Heights we build to the code that applies at your location.
What railing height is required by building codes for balconies?
In Slovenia the law currently says 1 meter. In Germany and Austria it depends on the building code and the fall height, commonly 90 to 110 cm. We make the railing to the height your code requires.
Can children's safety requirements, bar spacing, be built into the design?
They are built in by default. The regulation says 12 cm between bars; our internal rule is rather under 10 cm than over 11.
Do automated gates need CE certification, and do yours have it?
Our gates are a building element and do not need a CE certificate themselves. Our automation partner, who motorizes them, holds that certificate.
Can your fences meet historic-district and heritage-protection requirements?
Yes, gladly.
Do you provide structural calculations if my architect requires them?
Yes.
How do wind loads affect fence and gate design?
We have quite a few fences installed on the windiest Slovenian coast, including the Vipava valley where the bora blows, and to this day wind has caused us no problem and no complaint.
Can lighting or intercom wiring be integrated into gate posts?
Yes.
Are your coatings compliant with EU environmental regulations?
Yes.
What fire-safety considerations apply to metal railings on escape routes?
Railings on escape routes are built to the fire and building specification of the project. We forge to your architect's or engineer's specification and provide statics on request.
Can you produce railings compliant for public and commercial buildings, not just private homes?
Yes.
